Excessive Hair Fall and What to Do About It

Just how much hair fall is excessive?

While losing hair is an everyday phenomenon, when should we start being concerned about it? Losing 50–100 strands of hair daily is normal and nothing to worry about. This hair loss is usually not visible because new hairs grow simultaneously.

Why does excessive hair fall happen?

Excessive hair loss occurs when your scalp cannot replenish the lost hair quickly enough. It may be a cause for concern when you notice significant hair fall in the shower, on your pillow after sleeping, when combing your hair, or on the floor around your home.

If hair loss persists over time for you or your children, it may be worth consulting a doctor to understand the underlying condition and find a suitable solution.

There are three main causes of hair loss: heredity, hormonal imbalances, or medical conditions. Other contributing factors include age, stress, side effects from medication, hairstyles that pull on the scalp, incompatible hair care products, and postpartum hair fall.

Do's and Don’ts to Prevent Hair Fall

In some cases, hair loss can be permanent. If this is the case, getting treatment early can help reduce or delay further hair fall. You can also try the following adjustments:

  • A diet rich in vitamins and minerals such as zinc, selenium, Vitamins A, B, C, D, E, biotin (B-7), and iron is essential for healthy hair. A balanced diet promotes healthy hair and scalp.

  • Ensuring good blood circulation to the scalp is important. A DIY scalp massage, with or without oils, can stimulate the scalp. Doing this once or twice a week can help improve blood flow and encourage hair follicle growth.

  • Use silk or satin pillowcases to avoid tangles, friction, and pulling while sleeping. Avoid going to bed with wet hair, as this can increase breakage.

  • Avoid tight hairstyles that pull on the scalp and opt for loose hairstyles to minimize hair fall.

Herbal Remedies

Harnessing the benefits of herbs for healthy hair has seen a resurgence.

  • Hibiscus is rich in vitamins A, C, E, and antioxidants, supporting scalp health and stimulating hair growth. It improves blood flow to the scalp, delivering nutrients and oxygen to the hair follicles, encouraging stronger growth. Hibiscus also contains keratin-building amino acids that fortify hair strands, reduce breakage, and promote thicker growth. Its astringent properties tighten hair cuticles, reducing shedding. Additionally, hibiscus hydrates the scalp, improves elasticity, and adds shine.

  • Amla is effective against dandruff. If left untreated, dandruff can clog scalp pores and stop hair growth. Amla helps reduce fungal growth and improves scalp health.

  • Curry leaf strengthens the hair by improving the keratin layer, which prevents hair fall.

  • Fenugreek is rich in flavonoids, which promote hair growth due to its anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties.

  • Rosemary oil has remarkable compounds that benefit wound healing, promote nerve growth, and improve circulation. Its antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties help prevent hair loss and boost hair growth.
